CHARACTER HIGHLIGHT: Princess Pyeonggang — Who Is She In The Original Folklore?

Kim So Hyun plays Princess Pyeonggang in River Where The Moon Rises, a royalty who lost her memories and ended up as an assassin named Yeom Ga Jin, who is tasked to assassinate the king.

In Korea’s folklore, Princess Pyeonggang is also known as the weeping princess. Unlike Kim So Hyun’s character in River Where The Moon Rises, where she was abducted without knowledge of her lineage, in the tale Princess Pyeonggang actually left the palace on her own free will. This is because, at a young age, Pyeonggang believed that she would marry a commoner named On Dal, nicknamed as “The Fool.” Hence, once she reached the proper age to marry, she sets out to find him and vowed to turn him into a great man. (And she did!) Princess Pyeonggang and On Dal eventually met and even got married. The princess was smart and played a big part in helping their current livelihood get better. On Dal also became a warrior and a key person in defending their motherland.

Kim So Hyun’s character in River Where The Moon Rises may have a different storyline from the folklore. But her feistiness coupled with her good heart is almost identical to Princess Pyeonggang from the tales. But will Yeom Ga Jin indeed help in guiding and training On Dal (Jisoo) into becoming a proper general, just like his father, On Yeop (Kang Ha Neul)?

We’re excited to find out in the next episodes of River Where The Moon Rises.
